In a potential once in a lifetime opportunity, 16-year-old teen Toby Brown from Twickenham, London, has secured a $1M investment from Silicon Valley VC for his AI startup, Beem.
This significant funding will enable the young prodigy as he builds his first business, all before even taking his school exams. He will be able to participate in an accelerator programme in San Francisco, designed to rapidly scale his businesses.
Designed to streamline mundane tasks while keeping the human in the loop, Beem could change the way we interact with technology.
Imagine having an AI assistant that intuitively manages mundane tasks like organising emails, synchronising calendars, or booking travel accommodations. This is the vision behind Beem, an AI-native computer that, in Toby’s words, “handles all the boring stuff.”
By learning user preferences through proactive context, its potential applications range from helping professionals streamline workflows to assisting students with research and daily organisation.
From bedroom code to Silicon Valley gold
At seven, Toby started coding by creating maths games to master his times tables. By age ten, he had built his first computer. His passion led him to join Hack Club, a global community of teenage programmers, where he became the youngest member of its leadership team at 13.
The inspiration for Beem stemmed from the rise of AI chatbots like ChatGPT. “We are kind of doing what Apple did with the iPhone,” he explained, “starting with the user experience and working back into the tech.”
Beyond AI, Toby Brown has expressed an interest in ethical technology and ensuring that AI-driven tools remain accessible and beneficial to everyday users. He believes that the future of AI lies not in replacing human intelligence but in augmenting it to make people’s lives easier and more efficient.
Strategic investment and future aspirations
The $1M investment comes from South Park Commons, a San Francisco-based venture capital fund. The funds will be disbursed in two tranches: $400,000 initially, with an additional $600,000 upon securing further capital. In return, the firm will acquire a 7% equity stake in Beem. South Park Commons has previously invested in various cutting-edge startups, making this backing a strong validation of Beem’s potential.
Toby plans to use this investment to refine Beem further, aiming for a public launch within the next year. He has deferred his GCSEs until 2026 to focus entirely on this venture, with unwavering support from his family, friends, and school. In addition to improving Beem’s core functionalities, Toby Brown is exploring potential collaborations with educational institutions and businesses to integrate his AI assistant into real-world applications.
Toby emphasised, “Beem never started as a company; it was a side project… That’s how Facebook and Google were created; they never intended to be a company.”
