London-based Aegis Energy, which builds clean energy hubs across the UK for commercial vehicle decarbonisation, has secured £100M from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners.
The funding will support the construction of clean, multi-energy recharging and refuelling facilities designed specifically for commercial vehicles. The first five hubs will be built in Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby, and Towcester. The company plans to complete these initial stations by the end of 2027 and expand to 30 hubs by 2030.
How Aegis Energy builds the backbone of zero-emission commercial transport
Founded by Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith and Edmund Robins in 2022, Aegis Energy is creating a network of hubs to meet the refuelling needs of trucks and vans transitioning to cleaner fuels. Their mission focuses on solving the key challenges of decarbonising commercial transportation in the UK.
Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith, Co-founder at Aegis Energy, explains, “Aegis Energy was founded to help decarbonise the largest contributors to the UK’s highest-emitting sector. With mounting pressure from regulators and consumers, vehicle decarbonisation has become essential for business success and customer retention.”
Transport generates the highest greenhouse gas emissions in the UK, accounting for 29% of the total, with commercial vehicles responsible for 10%. The push to decarbonise continues to grow, including upcoming sales bans on non-zero emission vans and trucks between 2035 and 2040, while consumers increasingly demand sustainable solutions.
The company will provide the crucial missing link through this pioneering infrastructure network, enabling a new generation of low- and zero-emission commercial vehicles to transform UK roads and accelerate the clean energy transition.
A network of clean, multi-energy recharging and refuelling facilities
Aegis Energy is building a UK-wide network of clean, multi-energy charging and refuelling facilities for commercial vehicles. Speaking specifically, the hubs offer high-speed electric charging (with booking options), hydrogen refuelling, bio-CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), and AdBlue refuelling capabilities.
Each facility can service over 40 heavy goods vehicles and 25 vans simultaneously. A single Aegis Energy site is projected to cut carbon equivalent emissions by 14,300 tonnes per year when operating at full capacity.
UK decarbonisation advances through clean energy and innovation
The UK has made significant progress in decarbonisation, yet reaching its ambitious targets will require sustained effort, innovation, and investment. “The UK Government’s regulatory push to decarbonise the transit fleet creates meaningful opportunities for investment in companies like Aegis Energy that are pioneering this effort,” added Rory Quinlan, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Quinbrook. “While this represents Quinbrook’s first venture in sustainable transport, it is new and innovative energy transition infrastructure opportunities like Aegis that we are known for and that our investors seek exposure to.”
The UK’s decarbonisation success hinges on overcoming key barriers, accelerating the deployment of clean technology, and ensuring a fair transition that addresses economic and social impacts.
