1. Matthew, how did your entrepreneurial journey begin?

It all started in 2005 when I was working at a virtual reality tech company. A month-long health retreat opened my eyes to the transformative power of food and its ability to heal and improve lives. I left the retreat with a mission: to bring clean, ethical food to the public and inspire positive change.

My background as a bike messenger, mountain guide, and martial arts student in Japan shaped my curiosity and drive to ask big questions about health and change. The Plant Cafe became a natural extension of these interests—a way to merge my passion for wellness with a practical, impactful business.


2. What challenges did you face in building The Plant Cafe?

The biggest challenge was simply taking the first step—from idea to action. Once I committed, the hurdles came fast: navigating legal requirements, setting up infrastructure, and building a team. I had to learn everything from scratch, but perseverance and long hours got me through.

Scaling was another challenge. The entrepreneurial fantasy of rapid growth can be dangerous, leading to instability. I’ve learned that careful, deliberate scaling is the key to long-term success. Making mistakes on a smaller scale allows you to learn and adapt without jeopardizing the whole business.


3. How do you stay motivated during difficult times?

The mission behind The Plant Cafe—to improve health and promote sustainability—keeps me going. Knowing that the work we do has real social and environmental benefits gives me a sense of purpose that helps me push through doubt.

In the toughest moments, I’ve turned to meditation. Starting my day with 15 minutes to an hour of quiet reflection helps me calm my mind and stay focused. It’s a practice that reminds me to separate my thoughts from the stress of daily tasks and to stay connected to the bigger picture.


4. What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Scale carefully. It’s tempting to grow fast, but rapid expansion often leads to instability. Focus on building a strong foundation first, learning from early mistakes, and refining your operations before expanding.

Also, be humble and open to learning. Success comes from adapting to challenges and staying grounded in your mission. The entrepreneurial journey is not just about building a business—it’s about building yourself into someone capable of sustaining it.


5. What’s been a proud moment in your journey so far?

Seeing our first location thrive was incredible. Watching an idea take physical form and become a bustling business within months was deeply fulfilling.

We’ve also received awards for sustainability, like being recognized as the most sustainable restaurant in the Bay Area by The Nature Conservancy. But what means the most to me is the feedback from our customers—knowing that our food resonates with them and aligns with their values is the greatest reward.


6. What is your vision for The Plant Cafe?

Our vision is to provide affordable, 100% organic food that benefits both people and the planet. While the pandemic forced us to downsize, we’ve rebuilt with a thriving location in San Francisco, a commissary, and a test kitchen. We also have a franchisee at SFO airport.

Looking ahead to 2025, our goal is to roll out a national franchise model, partnering with like-minded individuals to bring The Plant Cafe to communities across the U.S. and beyond.
