We’re honored to speak with Serena Mastin, founder of Pulse Marketing, a seasoned entrepreneur whose journey from hardship to empowerment is truly inspiring. Serena shares her story of resilience, her dedication to supporting others, and her vision for leaving a legacy of positive impact.
1. Serena, your journey has had incredible highs and profound lows. Can you share some of the experiences that shaped you?
My early life was marked by a lot of uncertainty—I spent years in foster homes and even witness protection. During my teens, I struggled with addiction and homelessness. These years were incredibly challenging, but they taught me resilience and gave me a deep understanding of the strength within me.
Professionally, I worked my way up the corporate ladder for nearly two decades before taking the leap to start Pulse Marketing in 2013. Entrepreneurship brought its own trials, but each experience helped shape who I am today. On the personal side, I faced the devastating loss of my husband to suicide in 2020. That grief became a powerful driver in my commitment to helping others find strength and purpose.
2. In light of these challenges, what keeps you motivated as an entrepreneur?
Entrepreneurship can feel lonely, especially during tough times. I’ve found that building connections with like-minded individuals and creating a supportive environment is crucial. The COVID period and losing my husband to suicide were the most difficult times, compounded by financial struggles and a break-in at our office. However, our team came together to stabilize and strengthen the business.
We’ve implemented processes that build morale and resilience, including a work-from-home program and fully paid private counseling for employees facing personal challenges. These challenges taught me that the toughest moments often lead to our greatest successes.
3. You have such a powerful message about self-worth. Could you share more about how this impacts your approach to leadership?
One of my favorite quotes is, “You don’t have to set yourself on fire to keep others warm.” It’s a reminder that our worth isn’t defined by what we offer others but by our inherent value. I’ve learned to lead boldly, grounded in the knowledge that our worth is unshakeable.
This mindset helps me stay focused on my unique strengths and allows me to approach leadership with purpose and confidence. It’s a perspective I hope to pass on to others—that our value isn’t tied to others’ perceptions, but is something we carry within.
4. What’s a proud moment for you along your journey?
For me, it’s not one big moment but a collection of small wins. True success isn’t just reaching the top of the mountain; it’s in the climb. Each step builds resilience, strengthens spirit, and fuels growth. I hope my journey inspires others to persevere, knowing that the reward lies in the transformation that takes place as they rise.
5. What’s your vision for the future of Pulse Marketing and beyond?
Over the next five years, my goal is to grow Pulse Marketing and eventually sell it, freeing me to focus on empowering others on a larger stage through workshops, TED Talks, and writing. I’m also exploring the possibility of turning my memoir into a film, which would be an incredible way to share my story with an even wider audience.
On a personal level, I’m looking forward to dedicating time to philanthropy, traveling, and investing in unique, art-inspired properties that can serve as retreats. My hope is to create a legacy that aligns my professional journey with a fulfilling, impactful personal life.
6. What message would you like to leave with readers?
My ultimate goal is to create a ripple effect of positive impact. I live each day with purpose, gratitude, and intention, striving to make a difference in both my life and in the lives of others. My hope is that others see the power of resilience and the importance of staying true to their values. Our lives can be a journey of growth and empowerment, and I aim to create a legacy that inspires others to do the same.
