Insurance for pets: French Dalma grabs €20M to build a superapp for pet parents

Dalma co-founders

The traditional pet insurance and care market suffers from fragmentation, slow claim processing, limited veterinary advice access, and impersonal service. Despite industry growth, pet owners struggle to find comprehensive, convenient care solutions. Dalma, with its innovative approach, addresses these challenges with a complete pet care platform offering quick reimbursement (within 48 hours), unlimited live vet chats, direct veterinary payments, and an e-commerce marketplace for pet products.

To establish itself as a leader in pet insurance, Dalma has secured €20 million in Series B funding led by Breega, with participation from existing investors – Northzone, Anterra Capital, and Bpifrance’s Digital Venture 3 fund. This brings total funding to €37 million, with the valuation undisclosed to TFN.

The new funding will help Dalma expand beyond France and Germany to become Europe’s leading pet well-being partner. Planned features include a direct payment system for policyholders, an e-shop with curated pet health products, and the development of its AI-driven technology for faster claims processing.

Addressing the inefficiencies and lack of transparency in traditional pet insurance

Founded in Paris in April 2021 by Raphaël Sadaka (ex-Société Générale and Frichti), Alban De Préville (ex-PayPal and Frichti), and Harry Belinga (ex-PwC and Realytics), Dalma aims to modernise pet insurance through greater transparency and user-friendliness.

Alban De Préville, co-founder and CEO of Dalma, told TFN: “Dalma was created to disrupt the pet insurance market by offering a transparent and user-friendly alternative. It responds to a societal shift toward animal welfare and rising veterinary costs. The goal is to provide a more accessible and efficient insurance and prevention solution that meets pet owners’ needs.”

United by their passion for pets, the founders saw an opportunity to revolutionise pet insurance. They noted that despite high pet ownership rates in countries like France, pet insurance adoption remained low compared to European nations such as Sweden and the UK.

Alban de Préville shared: “Our vision goes beyond traditional insurance: we aim to transform how pet parents care for their companions. This new growth phase will enable us to strengthen our presence in France and Germany and accelerate our expansion into new European markets.”

Since its Series A funding, Dalma has grown 700%, insured over 60,000 pets, and achieved profitability in France. The company aims to become Europe’s premier pet care app by expanding from insurance into comprehensive pet care services, including unlimited veterinary consultations, direct veterinary payments, and an e-commerce platform.

Behind Dalma: AI-powered intuitive app

Dalma sets itself apart from competitors like Wagmo, Lassie, Trupanion, and Petplan with its digital approach, unlimited vet chats, flexible pricing, alternative healing methods, and comprehensive app features.

Dalma offers a seamless insurance experience: customers can customise their coverage in two clicks. The intuitive app, with its unique features, enables quick veterinary expense reimbursement. Beyond insurance, Dalma connects pet parents with veterinarians 24/7 through chat and video calls, offering educational programs developed with animal welfare experts.

“Dalma’s added value rests on two essential pillars: a more efficient insurance model than its competitors and an exceptional customer experience, recognised as one of the best in the market,” added Alban de Préville.

At its core, Dalma uses cutting-edge artificial intelligence to exceed industry standards. This technology enables instant claim analysis and reimbursement, significantly faster than the industry’s typical processing time.

Alban de Préville explained to TFN: “Dalma’s technology is centered on AI-powered automation, allowing instant claims processing, while competitors take several days; seamless, two-click insurance process for customers; and 24/7 veterinary support via chat and video calls. The company focuses on customer experience and efficiency, setting it apart from traditional pet insurance providers.”

Building the all-in-one pet care platform

Looking ahead, Alban de Préville envisions Dalma becoming the European leader in pet insurance within the next three to five years. The company plans to expand its operations beyond France and Germany, introduce new features like a direct payment system for veterinary expenses and an e-shop for pet health and wellness products, and build an ecosystem of insurance and services that redefines pet welfare.

“Dalma is capturing unique market dynamics by combining a societal shift toward animal welfare with the reality of rising veterinary costs. Our insurance and prevention solution for pets has already won the trust of nearly 60,000 owners. Breega is thrilled to join this journey alongside Alban and Raphaël,” said Benjamin Deplus, Partner at Breega.

“In just a few years, Dalma has created the market’s most transparent and high-performing insurance product, paired with a strong brand that has become essential for pet owners. We’re confident this unique combination will establish Dalma as the European leader in the sector. We’re delighted to support Dalma in this new chapter,” says Claire Castel, Investment Director at Bpifrance Digital Venture.
