Danish AI weather service provider Cordulus has raised €3 million in new funding from Danish Agro, an international agricultural group, and the Pajbjerg Foundation, which invests in agricultural technology. This recent funding follows investments by these groups in other Danish startups, including Uniqkey and Kvantify.
Cordulus provides hyperlocal weather forecasts powered by AI, primarily to help farmers make data-driven decisions for crop planning and management. The new funds will allow Cordulus to expand its weather solutions to other regions, supporting farmers in more areas with precision forecasting capabilities.
AI-based advanced weather insights
Founded by Morten Birk and Stefan Michael Pedersen in 2014, Cordulus was named after the Danish meteorologist and founder of the Danish Meteorological Institute, Niels Henrik Cordulus Hoffmeyer. He saw the potential in finding new ways to collect and enrich weather data and share these observations with others. The company follows his footsteps by finding new ways of collecting weather data and making it widely available and actionable, creating value across industries.
Role of AI in meteorology
As the weather becomes increasingly extreme and unpredictable, more and more businesses are affected. As a result, there is a high demand for detailed weather insights and forecasts that take into account local microclimates. AI is revolutionising meteorology by making it possible to analyse the vast amounts of weather data being observed in ways that were previously impossible.
For years, Cordulus has used AI to deliver hyperlocal weather forecasts which the company states are now 50% more accurate than traditional methods. This is done by incorporating and analysing a wide range of data sources such as satellite imagery and radar, as well as receiving millions of weather measurements every day from their weather station network, which with over 4,000 active weather stations is the largest in Northern Europe.
“We have been an investor in Cordulus since 2018 and have witnessed first-hand the strong development the company has gone through. The weather stations are good examples of the way we want to help farmers around the Baltic Sea with digital tools”, says Henning Haahr, CEO of Danish Agro Group and Chairman of the Board of Cordulus.
“The Pajbjerg Foundation is pleased to once again be able to help Cordulus grow and develop. Our focus is to support plant breeding, and weather conditions are a crucial parameter to navigate when developing new varieties for food and feed,” says Michael Stevns, Chairman of the Pajbjerg Foundation.
“We are proud of the continued support from our investors, which shows confidence in our long-term vision,” said John Smedegaard, CEO of Cordulus. “We help companies manage weather-related risks, reduce resource consumption, and reduce their carbon footprint. It is through AI that we can position ourselves as a key player in the green economy of the future.”
