On March 7, Mario Schindler, executive director of ANPROS, participated in a high-level meeting led by Minister of Agriculture Esteban Valenzuela to address the impact of recent U.S. tariff measures on Chilean agricultural exports.
The meeting also included Minister of Foreign Affairs Alberto Van Klaveren, Undersecretary of International Economic Relations Claudia Sanhueza, Office of Agricultural Studies and Policies (Odepa) Director Andrea García, and key representatives from the Chilean agro-export sector.
Key outcomes of the discussion included a commitment to strengthening diplomatic and commercial efforts to safeguard Chilean agricultural products’ position in the U.S. market. Additionally, participants explored opportunities to expand into new markets to mitigate the impact of tariffs. Minister Valenzuela emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration to ensure the future of Chilean exports, according to a press release.
International seed trade is a crucial pillar of Chile’s seed industry, with the United States as a primary export destination. In 2023, Chile exported $448 million in seeds, with 28% of that volume going to the U.S., according to ANPROS’ latest data.
ANPROS maintains strong relationships with Chilean authorities and works closely with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This ongoing collaboration has been instrumental in securing market access for Chilean seeds while ensuring compliance with phytosanitary and quality standards.
Moving forward, ANPROS remains committed to working alongside authorities to navigate current and future challenges, reinforcing the growth and competitiveness of Chile’s seed industry.
