Air Doctor secures $20M to expand global healthcare access for travelers

Air Doctor, a digital platform that connects travelers to healthcare providers, has secured $20 million in Series B funding to further develop its international network. The investment round was led by aMoon, with participation from Tokio Marine Holdings, Samsung Ventures, and existing investors like Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The funding aims to bolster Air Doctor’s expansion across Asia, reinforcing its presence in the global travel healthcare market. Just a while back, we also reported about how Formality raised €8M to simplify contract management with AI. It’s an interesting story too.

What problem is the startup trying to solve

With the post-pandemic travel boom of 2024, more people are venturing abroad, but many express concern over healthcare access while traveling. According to recent studies, 75% of travelers worry about potential health issues during their trips. Air Doctor seeks to address this growing concern by providing a solution that connects travelers to a network of over 20,000 multilingual doctors and specialists in 84 countries.

The company’s app is designed to reduce the time and cost associated with accessing medical care abroad. Its advanced algorithms match patients with doctors based on preferences such as language and location, offering immediate assistance. Air Doctor claims its platform can reduce outpatient claims by over 50% and cut overall processing time by 75%, making it a more efficient solution for both travelers and insurers.

How is the startup leveraging AI and digital solutions to streamline care

Air Doctor’s platform operates 24/7 in up to 21 languages, offering three types of consultations: in-clinic visits, home visits, and video consultations. This digital-first approach allows for flexibility, especially with its video consultation feature, which can provide patients with local prescriptions, reducing the need for unnecessary hospital visits. CEO Jenny Cohen Derfler highlighted that the platform not only provides peace of mind for travelers but also offers significant savings on medical expenses for insurers.

“The enjoyment of traveling abroad should not be affected by a lack of appropriate local healthcare options and a lengthy and costly insurance claim process,” said Derfler. “Air Doctor ensures healthcare is easy to access for travelers, while reducing exorbitant medical bills usually footed by insurers.”

A growing presence in the global market

Since its launch in 2018, Air Doctor has expanded its services to 2,000 cities across 84 countries. The platform’s unique ability to offer claimless and cashless healthcare experiences for insured travelers has helped it secure partnerships with major insurance providers. By directing travelers to outpatient services instead of expensive emergency care, the company has not only improved the customer experience but also reduced costs for healthcare providers and insurers alike.

Todd Sone, General Partner at aMoon, commented on Air Doctor’s transformative impact on the industry: “Their fully digital platform not only offers immediate medical support but also streamlines services for healthcare providers and insurers. By reducing unnecessary referrals, it helps cut costs and relieve pressure on congested medical systems.”

The latest round of funding will support Air Doctor’s expansion, particularly in Asia, a growing market for travel health services. The company has seen rapid growth in its user base, which has more than doubled in the last year. This growth is supported by high customer satisfaction levels, as reflected by its impressive Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 84, far exceeding the industry average of 36.

The new funding also strengthens Air Doctor’s ability to refine its technology and algorithms, ensuring that travelers have access to appropriate medical care in a timely and cost-effective manner. As part of its ongoing mission, the company aims to make its services even more accessible by expanding its network and enhancing the features of its platform.

What do we think about the startup

Air Doctor is positioning itself as a key player in the travel health sector, using advanced technology to bridge the gap between travelers and medical care. With a growing global network and the backing of major investors, the company is set to further disrupt the industry by offering a digital solution that reduces costs and improves healthcare access for travelers worldwide. As global travel continues to surge, Air Doctor’s role in making healthcare more accessible and affordable for international travelers is becoming increasingly essential.

By focusing on seamless integration, multilingual support, and cost-saving features, Air Doctor’s platform could potentially become the go-to resource for travelers in need of medical care. With its continued expansion and innovation, the company is on track to set new standards in the travel health industry.
