Mandi Hawke’s entrepreneurial journey began early, growing up in her father’s print shop and learning the fundamentals of running a business. As a neurodivergent and queer individual, Mandi’s lived experiences shaped her vision for Proud Empowerment Business Solutions (PEBS), the inclusive digital marketing agency she founded during the pandemic.
“PEBS combines my expertise in digital marketing with my passion for creating inclusive, empathetic, and empowering storytelling,” Mandi shares. “Our focus is on serving LGBTQ+ centers, mental health organizations, LGBTQ+ businesses, and neurodivergent entrepreneurs. It’s about more than business—it’s about building a space where everyone feels safe, seen, and valued.”
Overcoming Challenges and Finding Strength in Community
Launching PEBS during a global pandemic brought significant challenges, from financial setbacks to navigating uncertainty. “One of the hardest parts was building a brand that truly resonated with the community while staying financially afloat,” Mandi recalls.
Her resilience and the unwavering support of her community made the difference. “Every challenge was a chance to grow and reaffirm our commitment to inclusivity. The encouragement we received from clients and supporters reminded me why our work matters.”
Staying Motivated Through Tough Times
Mandi’s motivation stems from the impact PEBS has on the communities it serves. “When we faced a financial setback earlier this year, I was overwhelmed with imposter syndrome and fear that I was failing,” she admits.
What helped her push through was pausing to reflect on the successes her team had already achieved. “I took a step back, reevaluated our strategies, and moved forward with renewed determination. That moment reinforced my belief in the work we do and its importance.”
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
To new entrepreneurs, Mandi offers heartfelt advice: “Stay true to your vision and values. Build a strong support network, seek mentorship, and don’t hesitate to ask for help. Challenges are part of the journey, but they’re also opportunities to learn and grow.”
She also emphasizes the importance of outsourcing and delegation. “You don’t have to do it all yourself. Putting the right people in the right roles is essential for scaling your business.”
Celebrating Success and Looking Ahead
A proud moment for Mandi came when she reviewed PEBS’ organizational chart and saw her full team of specialists. “It hit me—I built this. Leading a team that brings my vision to life is one of the most rewarding parts of being a business owner.”
Looking ahead, Mandi’s vision includes expanding PEBS’ reach and impact while fostering a more inclusive digital landscape. A key part of this vision is Proud Academy™, an initiative to equip LGBTQ+ youth with digital marketing skills. “Through this program, we’re empowering the next generation and building a stronger, interconnected community,” she explains.
A Mission Rooted in Empathy
Through PEBS, Mandi aims to set a new standard for ethical, inclusive marketing. “I want to empower marginalized communities and ensure everyone has a platform to share their stories,” she says. “By championing consent-based marketing and fostering genuine connections, we can create a more compassionate and understanding world. There’s room for all of us.”
