Katie Dunn began her entrepreneurial journey in 2018, launching KStudio Design—a Denver-based web design and branding studio. With a unique background in both tech sales and design, Katie saw an opportunity to create meaningful digital experiences for small businesses across a range of industries, from tech startups to unions, investigation firms, and homebuilders. Her mission has always been clear: to help businesses achieve a cohesive, professional brand presence that not only looks great but drives tangible results.
Overcoming Challenges: Wearing Many Hats
Starting a business on her own presented challenges. “In addition to designing websites and branding, I had to manage every aspect of customer relationships, from initial contact to project delivery,” Katie recalls. It was overwhelming to wear so many hats while ensuring every client felt supported. To address this, she developed structured workflows, clear timelines, and began collaborating with other designers and developers. “I learned the value of building a reliable network. I didn’t have to do everything alone to succeed.”
These experiences taught Katie resilience, time management, and the importance of clear communication. Today, she approaches each project with confidence, ensuring her clients feel supported and her work exceeds expectations.
Staying Motivated Through Challenges
Motivated by a deep belief in her skills and vision, Katie navigates moments of doubt by reflecting on why she started: to bring impactful design to small businesses that might not otherwise have access to high-quality branding. “Pushing through doubt taught me the power of self-advocacy and clear boundaries,” she shares. By staying true to her expertise and core values, she’s built lasting relationships with clients and a business she’s proud of.
Advice for New Entrepreneurs: Define Your Boundaries and Ask for Help
Katie’s advice to new entrepreneurs is simple yet powerful: define your boundaries early and don’t be afraid to ask for help. “When you’re just starting, it’s easy to say ‘yes’ to everything, but taking on work outside your expertise can lead to burnout,” she warns. She also emphasizes the importance of collaboration, which can elevate your work and relieve some of the pressures of running a business. “Trust your instincts, prioritize relationships, and give yourself grace—it’s okay to learn and adapt as you go.”
A Proud Moment: Designing for a Cause
One of Katie’s most meaningful projects was creating the branding and website for TRFFC.io, the first nonprofit cryptocurrency initiative focused on combating human trafficking. “This wasn’t just any project; it was a chance to create a brand that reflected integrity and purpose,” Katie explains. Knowing her work would support HUMINT operators, OSINT investigators, and direct-action missions was incredibly rewarding. “It reminded me why I do what I do: to help brands tell powerful stories and make real impacts.”
Vision for the Future: Expanding KStudio’s Impact
Looking ahead, Katie envisions KStudio Design evolving into a collaborative studio that not only delivers visually compelling work but also drives meaningful impact. She aims to position herself as a go-to expert in strategic product design, helping businesses simplify complex ideas and connect deeply with users. Long-term, she sees KStudio expanding to include a network of talented designers, developers, and strategists, all working together to create digital experiences that are both functional and inspiring.
A Passion for Change
Katie’s ultimate goal is to create designs that empower people and inspire action. “For projects with a larger social mission, I’m passionate about using design to drive awareness and support causes that improve lives,” she shares. Through her thoughtful, user-centered approach, Katie is bridging the gap between technology and people, ensuring that her work leaves a positive, lasting impact.
